SOLAS XI-1/7 Regulation - Confined Spaces
The SOLAS XI-1/7 regulation which came into force in July 2016, obliges each vessel to possess at least one portable instrument capable of measuring the concentration of Oxygen (O2), the presence of flammable Gases or Vapors, Sulphidric Acid (H2S) ) and Carbon Monoxide (CO).
Tests must be performed prior to the entry of personnel into confined spaces and repeated at appropriate intervals until the completion of the work.
In short, the new SOLAS XI-1/7 regulation foresees the presence on board of portable 4 gas detectors that guarantee 10 hours of continuous operation, are waterproof and dustproof (at least IP65), able to carry out remote measurements (with an internal or manual pump connected to a flexible pipe) suitable for testing the atmosphere in an enclosed space before entry.
The calibration of the instrument is a mandatory requirement, and must be carried out according to the instructions of the manufacturer.
Failure to comply with SOLAS XI-1/7 makes a ship subject to detention after inspection by the Port State Control (PSC).
